short, underfished stretch of the River Severn at Royal Hill, Melverley (Pentre) — about 600 yards of left-bank fishing in one large field, just below the confluence with the River Vyrnwy. Genuinely on the Severn itself, downstream of the Severn/Vyrnwy confluence — distinct from a previously-listed free water at Melverley that was found to actually be on the Vyrnwy and removed from this directory. Runs on an inside curve, about 30 yards wide, shallow and gravelly at the top, deepening around the bend, with a steady deep straight at the bottom. Heavy bankside cover in places, some streamer weed. In low water, watch for a sunken barge about 200 yards above the downstream limit. Good numbers of coarse fish — chub predominate, plus dace, perch, roach, pike and barbel.

Off the A5 Shrewsbury–Oswestry road. 5 miles from the A5/A458 Bicton Heath roundabout, a minor crossroads just past Stone House (shortly before Nesscliffe) — left for Wilcott and Pentre. Follow through Pentre, about 2.5 miles, where the road bends right approaching the river — pull in near a lay-by shortly before the Royal Hill pub (upstream limit). Follow the path to a gate, then the field edge to the river bank — do not walk across crops or mowing grass. Lower limit at the field-end.
